Load Up Your Backswing

  • February 13, 2008
Tiger loads up his right side during his backswing.

You want to load up around your back side on the backswing without sliding off the ball. This means that your shoulders should be turning more than your hips. The key point is that it is a rotation around your right side, not a horizontal slide. The more loaded your backswing is, the more power you will be able to generate swinging into the ball.

Here’s a good drill to help you achieve a loaded backswing. Start by addressing the ball in your normal stance. Then, move your front foot so that it is right next to your back foot. Swing up to the top in this feet-together position and pause. Move your front foot back into its normal position. Hold this position for a few seconds, then return back to address. Go through this motion a few times, then go ahead and hit a shot. Practice this drill on the range, and you will soon notice a difference in your ability to load up behind the ball during your backswing.
