How Long Does a Golf Ball Last?

  • February 9, 2008
Golf balls undergo intense compression at impact.

How often do you replace the golf ball you use in play?  Depending on who you are and how good you are, it could be too long or too short.

Modern golf balls have a shelf life of about 7 to 10 years, or even longer under the right conditions.  These golf balls don’t lose their shape very easily.  If you are a good player who finds the fairway and avoids trees and water, you could theoretically use the same golf ball for a good portion of your golfing life.  Of course, this is unrealistic, but replacing a golf ball when it loses its shine is not doing your game or your wallet any favors.

If you spend a good amount of time figuring out which tree your ball bounced off of and which tree it’s going to bounce off next, then you might want to consider switching golf balls more often.  Since your game lives and dies on the putting surface, having a perfectly round ball is of utmost importance.  Colliding with trees is one thing that can significantly shorten the life of your ball.  Of course, whenever the cover is so badly damaged that it is either cut or you can no longer identify it as a golf ball, it’s time to switch to a new one.

Also, make sure that you choose the right golf ball for you.
