How to Cure a Mind Flaw
- January 2, 2008
A mind flaw is an error in a thought process. To understand how to fix our golf swings, we have to understand how to fix our minds. This is always more difficult than fixing our bodies. But to understand how we make the physical motion of a golf swing, we must understand the link between body and mind.
In golf, and many other areas of life, I am constantly observing people do things that are counter-productive to their goals. As part of the learning process, humans break down complex ideas into smaller pieces. We do this because our minds are only capable of focusing on one thing at a time. Our focus is focused; a pretty intuitive concept, when given a little thought.
The problem is that when we focus in on the smaller pieces, we tend to forget about the whole. So to learn successfully, we must be continuously linking back and forth from the pieces to the whole and vice versa. If we don’t, we run the risk of breaking down the whole into pieces, and putting them back together incorrectly to create something that, in the case of a golf swing, can be absolutely horrifying.
When you are working on a specific aspect of your golf swing, remember that you are working to improve your swing as a whole. When you are working on your swing, remember that you are working to improve your ball striking as a whole. When you are working to improve your ball striking, remember that you are working to improve your scores. And when you are working to improve your scores, remember that you are there to have fun - winning in golf is to never stop learning.
