Grip Pressure - How Hard to Grip the Golf Club

Grip pressure is the object of much confusion in the world of golfers. Most often, the scale analogy is used (on a scale of 1 to 10, grip a 5, or 7, or 4, or so on).

I think that gripping a golf club is analogous to gripping a pen. You want to maximize your control, and at the same time write quickly and painlessly. The grip pressure that is right for a golf club, the object being to swing it with the maximum combination of control and speed, is the same as the grip pressure required for a pen.

It may be difficult for you to translate gripping a pen into gripping something many times its size. So think of it this way. Grip a golf club the same way you would grip a hammer or shovel. The objective of your grip pressure is the same.
